Hello all— While I love our series It's Still a Big World, on underrated destinations, it can sometimes be difficult to whip up a tantalizing headline that isn't a repetitive version of "This Place is Actually Cool!" Luckily this week, Brandon Withrow's dispatch on San Antonio came with a headline hook built in–an unofficial city motto to "Keep San Antonio Lame." I myself visited a couple of years ago on a West Texas road trip that included stops in Marfa, Big Bend, and Terlingua. I'd always imagined the city as urban sprawl with tourists clustered around a tacky stretch of the River Walk. What I found was a perfectly lovely city and the River Walk was actually a delight. (There is, rest assured, a honky tonk stretch.) Brandon went all out exploring this city, so don't miss his piece if you're thinking of making your way there at some point. I'd also like to flag that I'm on the lookout for good food writers who know a destination's restaurant scene–the kind of traveler who, when asked, can rattle off a handful of great spots right then and there. Enjoy! —William O'Connor, Travel Editor |

OMG I Want to Rent This House! |
General Lachlan McIntosh House, Savannah, GA (Vrbo): People say not to judge a book by its cover, but we all know this maxim isn't entirely realistic. Who can resist the pull of first impressions? Most things in life are like Christmas presents: unless your family really gets you wrong—and that's on you if you forgot to send "Santa" your list—the gift inside will be just what you wanted. But it's even sweeter when it comes wrapped in beautiful paper and a flurry of ribbons and bows. Its historical bonafides and modern amenities are just the icing on the cake of this gorgeous three-story Savannah gem. Book Your Stay: General Lachlan McIntosh House, Savannah, GA: $1,150/night via Vrbo Don't miss previous OMG, I Want to Rent This House posts, which spotlight the most spectacular and unique homes that you can actually stay in. To say we're nostalgic for Paris is often a gross understatement! Luckily, our latest selection for Just Booked (our series on gorgeous travel-related coffee table books) is the fascinating Paris: From the Air by photographer Jeffrey Milstein and published by Rizzoli. There is something utterly captivating about seeing central Paris' geometric grid from above—the triangles, trapezoids, and parallelograms of city blocks. But the book also takes us from the ornate dome of Invalides (which we'd never seen up close) to the public parks and gardens that even though they were laid out centuries ago seem as if they were designed for viewers in the sky. Don't miss our other selections for our series on gorgeous travel-related coffee table books, Just Booked. |
