Malaka Gharib/NPR Friends,  I’m Jamal Michel, Life Kit’s new intern, and I’m excited to write today’s newsletter about one of the first episodes I got to help out with: connecting with your ancestors. This week, Life Kit host Marielle Segarra talks to spiritual practitioners and healers from different cultures and traditions about how to honor those who have come before us -- whether it’s by building an altar at home, exploring your genealogy or creating a ritual to remember our late family members.  These actions can help you forge a stronger connection to your roots, says Camara Meri Rajabari, a psychotherapist who helps Black, Indigenous and people of color explore their lineage. They can remind “you that you have this connection -- that you’re not alone in the world, you’re not alone with your problems.”  Listen to the episode Connecting with our ancestors can also help you understand your own behaviors and beliefs. For example, you may have inherited your anxiety from your mother, who may have inherited that trait from her mother due to a bad accident she experienced as a child. “All kinds of major historical events may affect family lines,” says Rajabari -- and it may even affect the generations to follow.  The episode got me thinking about my own family history. I have a fascinating past that I’d love to dig into. My mother, for example, told me that her grandmother labored in the fields in Guyana, a country in South America’s northern coast, after emigrating from India. When she passed away at age 106, she didn’t leave behind much information. Now, I want to learn more about her life, my ancestors in India (why did they come to Guyana?) and I haven’t even scratched the surface of my dad’s family, who hails from Haiti.
