On the heels of her new memoir, PepsiCo’s former chief executive Indra Nooyi reflects on how CEOs’ jobs have gotten more complicated as companies increasingly weigh in on complex, divisive issues such as climate change, consumer health, and race. “The biggest issue is when you use the words ‘socially responsible,’” Nooyi shared with the New York Times. “It sounds like you’re giving away money that shareholders should be getting.” [NYT] | | | • | A troubling trade-off. In her new book, Nooyi describes the challenges of juggling a demanding job with being available for her two daughters. Nooyi, who retired from the company in 2018, is a vocal proponent of policies such as remote work and paid parental leave that would support dual-career families such as her own. “Had I . . . been allowed to work flexibly, I would have not missed some of the important parts of my children growing up,” Nooyi told the Wall Street Journal. She took note of McKinsey research that suggests that advancing gender equality could add up to $13 trillion to global GDP in 2030. Women continue to bear the brunt of the economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic—they make up 39% of the global workforce yet account for more than half of the overall job losses. For this reason, contends Nooyi, more support structures are needed to help working families. | | | • | Room for improvement. Forty-one Fortune 500 companies are currently being led by female CEOs, but there is much room for improvement, says Nooyi.
