The internet can often feel like an endless feed populated by robots and algorithms. There are no robots here at Scouted, just real people who love deals and products that can improve your life. You're new here, so we want to introduce you to Scouted's editorial manager Jillian Lucas and staff writer Daniel Modlin. Here's what they can't live without:
What's the best thing you've bought in the last six months? Jillian: It took me nearly a year of working from home to invest in a foot rest, but now I can never go back. It's squishy but keeps my legs in the optimal ergonomic position. I'm probably going to bring it with me once we're back in the office, as well.
Daniel: Before I started at Scouted, I worked in book publishing. I love to read, and well, was pretty tired of lugging books everywhere. So I bought a Kindle and it has been a game changer. Now, my apartment isn't overflowing with books, and I can read wherever I want to.
What's one thing you've recommended to everyone? Jillian: One of the best things I've discovered in the last couple of years has been the Dr. Jart Cicapair Color Correcting Treatment. It's perfect for everyone that doesn't want to wear face make up, but needs a little help in the skin tone department. I've already gone through an entire jar (and you only need a small dab).
Daniel: Hey everyone, I really think you should invest in the Ember Mug. It keeps your coffee at the exact right temperature so you can actually drink it all before it goes cold. What's not to love? And it works with tea, too, of course.
If you could put together a dream outfit (shoes included), which pieces would you include? Jillian: This one's easy. This striped T-shirt from Mott & Bow, a pair of Universal Standard jeans, Converse high tops, and a leather jacket. Underneath it all is definitely a pair of Parade underwear and this supremely comfortable Aerie bralette that I want multiples of so I don't have to wear anything else.
Daniel: My dream outfit is one that prioritizes comfort, but still has style. Lululemon's ABC Joggers are a must—they are basically sweatpants that look like work pants. Pair that with a T-shirt from Buck Mason that fits perfectly, and a pair of Vans, and that's really all I need.
What's your go-to work bag and what's inside it? Jillian: I re-found my love of the Madewell transport tote, but this one is a bit different, as it actually has a zipper closure. My Jabra ear buds are never far from me and I like keeping a handful of pens in there as well as a notebook for jotting down ideas on my commute.
Daniel: I'm a backpack kinda guy, and I stand by my tried and true Topo Designs backpack. It's a rucksack that's perfect for hiking, or commuting, and stylish, too. Now what goes in it? A water bottle of course, something filled with coffee, headphones, and my favorite lunch containers—Stasher bags.
Fill a suitcase with five things you absolutely have to take with you on a trip: Jillian: My go-to travel bag is actually from Target's in-house brand Open Story. It's sturdy, expandable, and has all the pockets for my organization. I also usually bring a separate bag to pack things I need access to, like my laptop or headphones, so I go for the Landon Carryall from Dagne Dover. Packing cubes are a must have for organization and I also never travel without my EVA Birkenstocks, which can be pool/beach shoes, slippers, or walk-around shoes all in one.
Daniel: My suitcase of choice is the Arlo Skye Zipper Carry On because it has easy access into its front pocket, which I absolutely love. I'm gonna need Birkenstocks wherever I'm going (because you know it's tropical), an Aeropress because I have a feeling the coffee won't be very good, a deck of cards to keep me entertained, a camping hammock so I can lounge about, and last but not least, a good pair of earbuds for listening to audiobooks or music while I'm getting to my destination.
You have $50 to spend on Amazon. What single item do you get? Jillian: This is a tough one, because to me $50 on Amazon is a hard line to hit! I usually tend to buy quick, impulse-buy things that are $20 and under. If I had to recommend something, I'd say an Amazon Fire 7 Tablet is a great $50-ish buy for anyone. It's like a Kindle on steroids. It's the iPad's second cousin twice removed, plus without the iPad price tag. You get access to games and apps, plus the ability to stream movies and TV shows while you travel. My boyfriend picked one up before we headed on a 7+ hour train trip and it was great.
Daniel: OK—this might sound weird but I think everyone should have a headlamp. Not only is it great for camping if you're into that sort of thing, it's also great for reading in bed—it literally replaced my bedside lamp—and taking the dog out when it's dark outside. You never know when you're going to need one. You might think it's strange, but you'll thank me later.
We love kitchen stuff here at Scouted. What's the most important thing to have in a successful home kitchen? Jillian: This isn't a single thing, per se, but organization is incredibly important to have a good at-home cooking experience. Get yourself bins for your fridge. Keep your pot lids organized with a rack that you can stash in a cabinet. Stick a giant, magnetic shelf to wherever you can to make sure that all the important things are in reach. Add shelves to your spice cabinet. There are so many ways to stay organized, which will help you while you're wheelin' and dealin' in the kitchen. Make a system that works for you and stick to it. Cooking should be a way of stress release and being organized is the start to that.
Daniel: I think the most important thing to a successful kitchen, at the end of the day, is a pan you love to cook out of. After speaking with Julia Sullivan, a James Beard-nominated chef, I learned that carbon steel is better than cast iron. And it's true—once I got the seasoning down, this pan quickly became the only pan I cook out of for pretty much everything.
With a dog at home, what's been the best thing you've gotten for them (or for you) that helps with being a dog parent? Jillian: The dog in question, a neurotic Boston Terrier named Beef, is a nuisance when it comes to squeaky toys. He also really loves to gnaw on the seams of the toys to separate them, pull the stuffing out, and proceed to chew on just the squeaker like it's a piece of bubble gum. It's really great, let me tell you. Anyway, I'm not sure who told me about these, but I got a "silent" squeaker toy that is honestly a lifesaver. The squeaker inside the toy is ultrasonic (like a dog whistle) so it makes noise at a frequency that humans can't hear, but dogs can. It's really impressive and saves the headache of an incessant squeak.
Daniel: A dog with long nails clickety-clacking around on my wood floors is like nails on a chalkboard to me. I used to be too afraid to use nail clippers at home with her (still am). Thankfully, a dog groomer recommended this nail grinder and it's amazing. It's basically a nail file for dogs—and I'm not gonna lie, Willie loves getting a mani-pedi while watching TV.
