Hello all, I'm back in the sweltering embrace of Washington, DC in August, and already missing my time out west. In fact, residents of San Francisco are downright spoiled in my opinion when it comes to their mild summertime weather. On top of that, San Francisco has been home to one of the world's greatest urban parks, the Presidio, which just got a whole lot cooler. Our lead feature this week looks at this 1,400 acre park's newest addition, the Tunnel Tops. For decades, Presidio's main weakness was a highway cutting it off from the shore. Well, they've built right over it and added some cool amenities. For our series on underrated destinations, It's Still a Big World, I visited Cincinnati back in June and found a city very much on the upswing—great food, truly incredible art, and a palpable sense of a place that's getting things right. Perhaps not content enough in having some of the world's most famous islands and ancient sites, Greece has decided it also needs to own what it thinks the future of travel is—underwater tourism. Demetrios Ioannou explores the country's new aquatic attractions as well as what's to come. Enjoy! –William O'Connor, Travel Editor |

It's arguably the most beautiful of America's major cities, hill upon picturesque hill lined with beautiful homes and buildings, wreathed in fog with the bay as backdrop. But for many of us, San Francisco isn't home. That's why we're bringing you there with our latest selection for Just Booked, our series on gorgeous new travel books, San Francisco: Portrait of a City from Taschenfrom Taschen. With enlightening text from Richie Unterberger and fantastic photography selected by editor Reuel Golden, the book is a trip (pun intended) into the last century and a half of this fabled city. It's broken up by periods (1846-1929, 1930-1945, 1946-1963, and so on) that capture the dizzying number of identities this city has worn in such a short span. Don't miss our other selections for our series on gorgeous travel-related coffee table books, Just Booked. |
