TOP NEWS The Supreme Court expands gun rights  Nathan Howard/Getty Images The Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that the Second Amendment guarantees the right to carry firearms in public for self-defense. The justices also created a new, convoluted test for evaluating the constitutionality of gun laws. [Washington Post / Robert Barnes and Ann E. Marimow] The case, New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, challenged a New York state law requiring gun owners to demonstrate a need to obtain a permit for carrying a concealed weapon outside the home. [BBC / Anthony Zurcher, Bernd Debusmann Jr, and Boer Deng] In a 6-3 ruling, the Court's conservative justices said the New York law violated the right to keep and bear arms. [Associated Press / Jessica Gresko] In a dissenting opinion, the liberal justices referenced recent mass shootings and said the Court was responsible for considering gun violence in gun control decisions. [NBC News / Pete Williams] The Court once refused to take up Second Amendment cases; however, it seems more willing to do so now that conservatives dominate the Court. [New York Times / Adam Liptak] The decision's new constitutionality test means many gun laws are likely to face legal challenges. [ABC News / Meredith Deliso] UK rail workers demand better pay UK railway workers on Thursday staged a second strike demanding pay that keeps up with inflation and greater job security. Another walkout could happen Saturday. [The Guardian] Forty thousand workers went on strike, leaving just one in five trains operating. UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson urged all parties to work out an agreement while calling the strikes "a terrible idea." [Reuters] After the latest round of talks failed, the union leader on Thursday said even more strikes are likely unless workers get a settlement. [BBC / Catherine Evans] Meanwhile, British Airways staff at London's Heathrow Airport also voted to strike over unmet demands to roll back pandemic pay cuts. [NPR / Bill Chappell] The Biden administration agreed to cancel $6 billion in student loans for 200,000 borrowers defrauded by their colleges. [CNN / Katie Lobosco] The committee investigating the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol held its fifth hearing, focusing on Donald Trump's efforts to push the DOJ to overturn the 2020 election. [CNN / Jeremy Herb, Zachary Cohen, Annie Grayer, and Ryan Nobles] Long-range US missile systems arrived in Ukraine on Thursday.
