Hello all– Summer is in full swing, and that means many of you are heading for New England's scenic shores, or traipsing around Europe's great cities. This time of year, one tiny little country at the edge of Europe finds itself the destination for travelers determined to find a bit of everything. No, not Portugal, but rather the Caucasus country of Georgia. Its capital city Tbilisi is downright spectacular and when I visited a few years ago it was positively thrumming with lively restaurants, bars, and clubs filling its unique streets. Tbilisi is a major food destination now, so we've asked local journalist Paul Rimple to put together our second edition of the Eat Sheet on Tbilisi! (For an explainer on the Eat Sheet, head over here.) Tomorrow is Bloomsday, which is the date when the advertising agent at the center of James Joyce's Ulysses, Leonard Bloom, walks Dublin from dawn till dusk. Malcolm Jones was recently in Dublin, and in his latest dispatch, contends that the Irish capital is one of the great walking cities of the world. Last but not least, our latest edition of It's Still a Big World takes us to Sparta. Yes, it turns out that ancient warrior still exists and it's in a pocket of Greece that remains untrammeled by tourists. –William O'Connor, Travel Editor |

OMG I Want to Rent This House! |
Bajan Heights, St. James, Barbados (onefinestay): If it weren't for the palm trees, one might mistake this home for a southern plantation with an indelicate past. But this is not Scarlett O'Hara's family estate—this is Bajan Heights, an island palace on the sunny shores of Barbados. Bajan Heights is a grand, seaside mansion that combines all the best elements of island living, namely a view of the ocean with beach access just a short drive away, but in a location that's nestled in the lush trees of a posh neighborhood. With this set up, the inescapable sandy floors of beachside living are a choice, not a lifestyle. Paradise is having the freedom to decide whether or not you actually want to leave the grounds of your home while on holiday. When you have this view, staying right where you are or leaving to check out the beaches of Barbados becomes a real Sophie's choice. Book Your Stay: Bajan Heights, St. James, Barbados: $1,650/night via onefinestay. Don't miss previous OMG, I Want to Rent This House posts, which spotlight the most spectacular and unique homes that you can actually stay in. Check out the full archives. |
Travel to the World's Coolest Postmodern Buildings With This Book |
Only Brutalism comes close to the universal disdain many reserve for a lot of Postmodern architecture. Lovers of classical architecture as well as those who adore the stripped-down intensity of modernists bemoan the ill effects of this architectural style dominant since the 70s. And yet, as the completely wonderful new coffee table book from Phaidon, Postmodern Architecture: Less is a Bore, shows, the style is full of some of the most joyous, exuberant, outlandish, and fun works on the planet. Flipping through, it's impossible not to be mesmerized by the interiors of Robert A. M. Stern's Llewelyn Park residence or charmed by Fat and Grayson Perry's house in Essex. That's why it's our latest selection in our series on gorgeous new travel-related coffee table books, Just Booked. Don't miss our other selections for our series on gorgeous travel-related coffee table books, Just Booked. |
