TOP NEWS What we learned from the January 6 hearings Jabin Botsford-Pool/Getty Images During its first public hearing Thursday, the House committee investigating the events of January 6, 2021, provided an overview of how the plot to overturn the 2020 election culminated in a violent attack on the US Capitol. Here are some takeaways. [NPR / Deepa Shivaram] Then-President Donald Trump knew he lost the election — his staff and advisers repeatedly told him there was no voter fraud that could have changed the results. People close to Trump who participated in the plot to overturn the election also knew he lost. [Washington Post / Amber Phillips] Emboldened by Trump's commands, far-right extremist groups the Proud Boys and the Oath Keepers planned to breach and attack the Capitol that morning. [CNN] Hours into the attack, Vice President Mike Pence called the national guard to stop the insurrection — not Trump. The White House issued instructions to make it seem as though Trump was in control. [Slate / Jeremy Stahl] In the weeks following the riot, several Republican lawmakers involved in the plot to overrule the will of American voters — including Rep. Scott Perry (R-PA) — asked for presidential pardons. [Tim Dickinson / Rolling Stone] The Committee's next public hearing will focus on Trump's efforts to steal the election even though he knew he lost. It will be Monday at 10 am ET. [USA Today / Ella Lee] No more negative Covid-19 tests required for international passengers The CDC will lift the requirement that international passengers test negative for Covid-19 before traveling to the US, starting Sunday. [NPR / Ximena Bustillo] The CDC based the decision on "science and data": Effective vaccines and treatments mean the rule is no longer necessary, a Biden administration official said. [The Hill / Peter Sullivan] The air travel industry had asked the administration to drop the rule, which has been in place since January 2021, to boost international travel and tourism. [Axios / Erin Doherty] After 90 days, the CDC will evaluate the rule change and could reinstate it if a new variant emerges. [CNN / Kaitlan Collins] MISCELLANEOUS Ginni Thomas, the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, wrote to 29 Arizona lawmakers to encourage them to overturn Donald Trump's election loss. [Washington Post / Emma Brown] This week, researchers discovered microplastics in fresh Antarctic snow for the first time. [NBC News / Evan Bush] Former Fox News editor Chris Stirewalt, who was fired after the 2020 election, will testify before the January 6 committee on Monday. [Business Insider / Jake Lahut] Annual inflation hit a 40-year high in May, and the Federal Reserve could continue raising interest rates.
