Hello all— I'm escaping the last lime-green gasps of pollen season in D.C. with some island hopping in the Caribbean. Unfortunately I forgot that I get extremely seasick, which is why I'm a day behind. Our lead feature this week comes from a different island, one that many don't think of for tourism, but you can fix that by reading Anthony Paletta's piece on Snug Harbor in Staten Island for our It's Still a Big World series. This magical complex of Greek temples and extensive gardens has a fascinating history as a former sailors' home and today is an underrated and often unknown oasis in our largest city. Beast Travel is increasing its focus on food and drink, so expect to see more pieces like Laura Studarus' profile of Clifton's Republic. In it, Studarus takes us through this iconic L.A. eatery and club's mind boggling history and interviews its dedicated owner. And finally, Loïc Cardinal has a new dispatch for Room Key, taking us to Miami Beach's latest hotel, Life House South Beach, housed in a unique historical building. Enjoy! —William O'Connor, Travel Editor |

OMG I Want to Rent This House! |
Sutherland, Darling Point, Sydney (Vrbo): When it comes to staying in a boutique hotel or buying your forever home, anything brand spankin' new has a certain appeal. The most modern amenities, carpets that haven't been trampled on by hundreds of feet, and the trendiest decor are all very attractive features. Choosing to rent a fabulous holiday home, on the other hand, generally equates to finding a place that's charming and a bit lived in. Unless you're renting Sutherland, that is. This property is both a vacation home and a gleaming new build that has all the impeccable design chops that you normally equate with big dollar signs and a mortgage. Soak up all that Down Under sun and open plan gloriousness while you can and remember—there's always next time. Bon voyage! When we think today of iconic religious architecture, the first images that spring to mind are often churches, mosques, and Buddhist monasteries. But some of the most spectacular houses of worship in the world are those of the Jewish faith—synagogues. That's why the latest selection for Just Booked, our series on exciting new travel coffee table books, is Rizzoli's Synagogues: Marvels of Judaism by Leyla Uluhanli. What is particularly amazing as you page through the book is how they all seem to simultaneously reflect their surroundings and era, but still retain a clear Jewish identity. Don't miss the Ibn Shoshan Synagogue in Toledo with its whitewashed walls and intricately carved capitals, or Frank Lloyd Wright's Beth Sholom in Pennsylvania, two great examples of this. Don't miss our other selections for our series on gorgeous travel-related coffee table books, Just Booked. |
