| | A real historical gem was uncovered last weekend: Archival news footage from 1970 of Prince Rogers Nelson as a tween, being interviewed outside his school about a Minneapolis educators strike. It’s a brief clip, but very cool thing to see, and the story of how it was found is a pretty fun read, too. Erotic thrillers appear to be having a moment right now, and I’m here for it. The newest season of Karina Longworth’s beloved (for good reason) podcast You Must Remember This is a part of this wave, a deep dive into the intersection of sex and Hollywood of the past several decades. The first episode, which dropped this week, takes on the “Porno Chic” era of the 1970s, with movies like Deep Throat and Last Tango in Paris. Dana Stevens’s appraisal of Chris Pine’s career thus far – which includes a solid argument for why he’s this generation’s Robert Redford – is well worth a read. |

The Grammys were on Sunday, and while they weren’t quite as unpredictable as the Academy Awards, there were certainly highs and lows. Stephen and NPR culture correspondent Anastasia Tsioulcas burnt the midnight oil to recap the performances and the awards. Stephen also analyzed 10 major takeaways from the night. The second season of the charming HBO Max series Starstruck has arrived, so we revisited Linda and Ronald Young Jr.’s conversation about Season 1. I gushed about Better Things, one of my most favorite shows, along with Brittany Luse and Amil Niazi, as the FX series winds down its fifth and final season. Stephen, Glen, and Ayesha Rascoe parsed through the bloodless Jared Leto flick Morbius. And Stephen, Danny Hensel, Daisy Rosario, and I chatted about Michael Bay’s chaotic yet mediocre high-speed movie, Ambulance. Linda also wrote about Julia, a new miniseries about Julia Child, and the excellent finale of the Elizabeth Holmes miniseries The Dropout. And even though we’re all definitely sick of Slap Discourse at this point, I had fun joining Ayesha Rascoe and Eric Deggans on Weekend Edition, to talk about how prominent members within Black Hollywood’s elite have shown support (and animosity) for one another over the years. |
