January 14, 2022
It's January 14, 2022, and another Friday to celebrate! We all made it! Time to cruise into the weekend for some much deserved relaxation. We're also out on Monday for MLK Day, so here's some music to apologize for our absence. Enjoy. Apple Music | Spotify ⏰ Today's Big Stories... in 30 Seconds Today We Watched, Read, and Listened to (so you don't have to): 476 articles, 13 podcasts, 11 press releases, 491 tweets, and 19 YouTube videos 1. Microsoft Confirms Discontinuing Xbox One Consoles Microsoft has officially ceased production of the Xbox One to focus on the Series X and Series S, admitting in a statement that production was halted at the end of 2020. This decision was likely made to give it enough leeway to keep up with the expected demand for the new consoles. Makes sense to us! 2. Dropbox Updates macOS App to Support M1 Chips Dropbox has finally updated their macOS cloud storage app to support Apple's M1 chips, including the M1 Pro and M1 Max. Previously, Dropbox could still run on M1 Macs, but it required going through a translation application called Rosetta 2. This is definitely the better option, even though it's still in beta. 3. Comcast Successfully Tests a Multigigabit Cable Modem Comcast announced yesterday that it successfully tested the first ever multigigabit cable modem capable of upload/download speeds above 4Gbps. There's no telling when this modem, powered by 10G network tech, will reach the rest of us, but hopefully it's sooner than later. We want those speeds! 🦑 Go Deeper The Apple Watch is great for fitness, health, and keeping up with notifications, but when it comes to using other apps, it's a little iffy. Sascha Brodsky digs into the situation, which has some developers wondering if the wearable should pick a lane and stick to it. 🎱 By the Numbers Yeah, the Xbox One was on the way out Data: VGChartz We really shouldn't be surprised Microsoft decided to sunset the Xbox One. The console was already seven years old when the Series X|S debuted, and based on the chart above, its sales deflated even more once its successor arrived. That said, seven years is a heck of a run. Nicely done, Xbox One. 🔥 Today's Hot Deal
Another day, another TV deal. This time, it's Amazon's Fire TV 43-Inch 4K Omni Series, which is down to $284.99 on Amazon right now. Sound too good to be true? Best to pick it up now before it's too late. 🤓 Nerd Out "Well that wasn't on my 2022 bingo board." —Bob Schulties, Senior Editor You know Portal, the beloved puzzle-platformer video game from Valve with murder robot GLaDOS? Geico (of all companies) has a new ad in which the gecko mascot visits the Portal universe. Weird? We'd say so. (Share on Twitter) 💎 You Know You Want It Unlimited power! Image: Satechi Need more charging power? Satechi's 165W USB-C 4-Port PD GaN Charger should do the trick. With it, you can power your MacBook, iPad Pro, iPhone and whatever other devices are in dire need of power. Never (hopefully) worry about your battery life again while working from home. 🎥 Behind the Scenes Don't touch that dial skip button We're used to skipping a TV show's intro after we've seen it a few times, which is exactly why HBO Max's Peacemaker has a ridiculous opening in which its main cast is doing a musical number. Talking to Polygon, director James Gunn said he wanted to "vanquish the skip forward button." Mission accomplished. 🗞 Extra! Extra! We've got you covered with the best in daily tech news!
