Hello all—
Something that I believe makes Beast Travel unique from other travel outlets is our obsession with history and the places we love to travel. I believe that when we get to immerse ourselves in the rich tales and characters of a place, one's visit becomes that much more memorable.
This week's lead feature does just that. In an adapted excerpt from his new book Under Jerusalem: The Buried History of the World's Most Contested City, Andrew Lawler cracks open the mystery of what happened in the early 1980s when an Israeli rabbi was caught tunneling under the Temple Mount. It turns out, he reports, the rabbi thought he'd found the Ark of the Covenant. It's an incredible tale that reaches up to the highest level of the government!
We also love our National Parks, and you won't want to miss this week we have a great rundown of what you'll find in our nation's newest one, New River Gorge, from Cassandra Brooklyn. After reading it, you'll likely want to plan a trip to West Virginia soon!
While so much of travel is often about excitement in cities or relaxing in places of spectacular natural beauty, this week we have a truly lovely piece about finding connection and liberation in silence while staying with monks in France from journalist Sarah Sands. Enjoy!

Enjoy an Expertly Curated Weekend in Nature While Barely Lifting a Finger Scouting Report: Getaway offers luxe cabins outside of major cities equipped with everything you need to have a good time and get into nature. There's something for everyone: whether it's making smores or going on a grueling hike, this will be the most memorable gift they've received yet.
It's not camping, but I felt like I got an even better experience in nature this way, lying in bed, staring at the quivering trees out of the giant glass window, as they teetered upwards and dotted the star-speckled sky.

"Archeologists excavating a Byzantine era site unearthed a valuable and remarkably beautiful gold and purple stoned ring from the environs of a large factory that produced white wine. Worst of all, scientists speculate that the ring was supposed to ward off the deleterious effects of over-imbibing, meaning that the unlucky owner was not just out of pocket, they were also out of ancient Advil." — Historian Candida Moss unpacks a recent archaeological discovery and the history around ancient hangover cures.
