Supply chain tech adjusts to new realities to ramp up global trade flows | | VC investment in supply chain tech slowed in Q1 from 2021's record pace. Startups collected $14 billion in the quarter across 301 deals—marking a decline of 20.4% year-over-year in deal value. The turmoil of recent years exposed the fragility of global supply chains. Changes in consumption patterns brought on by the pandemic, hoarding, price fluctuations and inflation all conspired to drive unprecedented volatility. Sensing an opportunity, investors and startups answered with a dramatic spike in supply chain activity in 2020 and 2021. Now, PitchBook analysts say that opportunities in the developing world and relentless competition in ecommerce to deliver products in shorter time frames are likely to further spur investment and technology development across the vertical. Our Q1 Emerging Tech Research update on supply chain tech deep dives into the vertical's investment activity and trends, comprehensively assessing emerging opportunities in last-mile delivery and warehousing automation. It also includes company spotlights on Flexport, ElasticRun and Exotec. | | | | | | Mapping France and Benelux's VC ecosystem | | | (akinbostanci/Getty Images) | | | Venture investments in France and the Benelux region have ballooned in recent years, and Q1 2022 was no different. Singapore tops list in VC funding per capita | | | (Richard Drury/Getty Images) | | | Singapore has by far the largest amount of venture funding per capita among countries with over $1 billion of capital raised. We've compiled a list of the 10 countries with the largest amounts of VC capital per person since the start of 2022. | | | | | | In Q1, top VCs remained bullish on Web3, DeFi and the metaverse | | The Emerging Tech Indicator provides a quarterly overview of startups receiving seed and early-stage investments from a limited subset of VC funds. In the first quarter of 2022, our analysts tracked 227 deals that involved the 15 top-performing VC firms. The report takes a closer look at five Q1 emerging market segments—Web3 & DeFi, fintech, biotech, data tech and enterprise SaaS—serving as an indicator of technologies that are likely to drive growth opportunities over the next several years. Key takeaways include: - Web3 & DeFi was the largest area of ETI investment for the third consecutive quarter, with $2 billion invested across 29 deals.
- Fintech companies secured $614 million in ETI investment across 23 deals in Q1, with roughly half of that total collected by startups outside the US.
- The metaverse has emerged as a strong theme within Web3 & DeFi, as several ETI startups in the gaming and crypto industry incorporated the term as a key part of their branding.
- While Q1 VC activity has proven to be relatively resilient despite broader market turbulence, we expect Q2 data may show further retraction from the peak activity levels reported over Q4 and Q1.
