Hello all— I'm currently sailing up the Nile (which means, of course, heading south) from Luxor to Aswan aboard a dahabiya run by the company Nour el Nil. I'll be writing about it in the next couple of weeks but I can say now there is something positively decadent about sailing through the desert past temples and towns, following in the footsteps of so many travelers before me. Our lead feature this week is an excerpt from Julia Morgan: An Intimate Biography of the Trailblazing Architect by Victoria Kastner. For the unfamiliar, Julia Morgan was the architect of Hearst Castle in California, the sprawling eclectic hilltop estate built by the mining heir turned newspaper baron. In the excerpt, Kastner reveals the challenges Morgan faced in designing and decorating a house for a man who could not stop buying–in fact, Hearst likened himself to a drunk when it came to shopping. When one thinks of exciting archaeology one often imagines Mexico or Egypt or India, not coastal England. But this week's column from Candida Moss takes some fascinating news about the search for an underwater city there and looks at just how many "lost" cities might be lurking beneath the waves worldwide. Finally, a couple months ago I was in Phoenix for our It's Still a Big World series and its central library, which had recently won one of architecture's more prestigious awards—the AIA 25 Year Award. (Basically, it's an award for a building that holds up and is still beloved.) I toured the mesa-like structure with its architect, and the building is the latest selection for our series on the world's most beautiful libraries!

OMG I Want to Rent This House! |
Lisheen Castle, County Tipperary (Vrbo): It's the season of gorgeous silk dresses, of dance cards, of gossiping about the latest courting pairs, and of visiting ballrooms found in only the finest estates and castes. Yes, it's the season of the return of Bridgerton and in honor of Shonda Rhimes' latest installment, we think it's only appropriate to don your finest gown and rent a castle. While you are preparing the invites for your week-long ball in the Irish countryside, we recommend ensuring no Lady Whistledowns make your list. When you're a member of the landed gentry, your closest neighbors are often of the four-legged variety, which makes for an especially picturesque view. In Bridgerton, families throw balls to assert their dominance in society. We recommend modernizing that concept by throwing a holiday that will be gossiped about for generations to come…or at least until next summer. Book Your Stay: Lisheen Castle, County Tipperary, Ireland: $1,230/night via Airbnb Don't miss previous OMG, I Want to Rent This House posts, which spotlight the most spectacular and unique homes that you can actually stay in. The Best Travel Magazine There Ever Was |
We may be digital only here at Beast Travel, but we still love the glamour of old magazines. And few magazines have a two-for when it comes to inspiration like that of Holiday, the iconic travel magazine that ran from 1946 to 1977. So, for our series Just Booked on spectacular travel-related coffee table books, we're highlighting Pamela Fiori's Holiday: The Best Travel Magazine That Ever Was. This book from Rizzoli captures what made the magazine such a cultural touchstone: the writers and photographers (Kerouac, Slim Aarons, Robert Capa, among others), the fantastic covers and images (we love the one of the Cute Sark by Slim Aarons in Kashmir), and the snappy writing (the cutting yet flattering description of Newport, RI in the August 1954 issue is fantastic). While the magazine was re-launched in 2014 out of Paris by Franck Durand (who wrote the book's intro) as a biannual, the book captures the glory of the magazine era at a time where travel was perhaps more exciting than at any time in history. |
