Hello all–
I hope those of you hit hard by the snowstorm made it through without any trouble. Sadly for me, today is my last day in the paradise that is Todos Santos (which we put on our 2022 destination guide), but I'm very excited to drive the length of the Baja Peninsula back to Los Angeles.
With our lead feature this week, we find ourselves in the forests of Oregon. There, Laura Studarus introduces us to the man who purchased the plane Jackie O flew on for the funeral of Aristotle Onassis and has since turned it into a home you can visit. It's fascinating!
Don't miss our latest feature for the World's Most Beautiful Libraries series. We'll head inside the last project of Richard Neutra before he died, Huntington Beach Central Library. It was a father and son work, and the architect saw it as the culmination of all his theories and career.

OMG I Want This House! Wategos Villas, Byron Bay, Australia (Vrbo): For two years, we've all been glued to news of the "next wave." So, it's safe to say, we all deserve a break. But if you choose to take the vacation days that we believe every human being on the planet has accrued by living through COVID and use them on a holiday in Byron Bay, you will not necessarily get a break from wave watching. That's because this hotspot in New South Wales is famed for its excellent surfing. Between spending days in the South Pacific Ocean and nights in this gorgeous villa, you may just start to feel a little of that ol' 2019 energy coming back.
In addition to having the ocean in your proverbial backyard, you also have a private pool and gardens in your actual backyard. Unless you choose to vacation during the rainy season (and why would you ever do that!), we don't see any reason for you to spend any time under a roof while on this vacation.
The property listing claims that Wategos Villas "amplifies every experience." Normally, we would call bullshit on such an overblown claim. But, in this case, they just might be right. If only our boss would send us to Byron Bay to see for sure…
Book Your Stay: Wategos Villas, Byron Bay, Australia: $3,110/night via Vrbo

Travel to an 'Art Deco Dream Come to Life' Fancy hotels come and go all the time in New York City. There are a handful, however, that not only stick around but come to represent something—an era, an ethos, a vibe. Few are as storied as Madison Avenue's The Carlyle—the Art Deco tower that rose to fame in the period after World War II and became a center of glamour in the Kennedy years—a position it has never relinquished. Thus our latest selection for Just Booked (our series on gorgeous travel-related coffee table books) is Assouline's new tome, The Carlyle.
The book beautifully encapsulates the hotel's history. There are original photos from the 1930s of Dorothy Draper's decor (oh, the light fixtures!), old advertisements for the hotel apartments ("English manor standards of service"), and dozens of shots of the stars who have performed, lived, or hung out here over the years.
As Lenny Kravitz writes in the book's introduction, "It was an Art Deco dream come true."
