Hello all—
After a much needed hiatus, I'm back! I'm on my way to Venice for the opening of its only new five star hotel this year, Ca' di Dio. I'm feeling nostalgic as it's my first time back in Venice since I was 20 and hopped over for Carnival while studying abroad in Fiesole. Drunk and broke, my friends and I kept going back to the train station to sneak on trains to use the bathroom rather than pay for a restroom—very classy I know. The weather is supposed to be wonderful while I'm here, but I'm secretly hoping there are gray moments—a bit of fog to soften is always better than harsh direct light for an aging city.
Speaking of harsh—many of you have no doubt visited a Frank Lloyd Wright property over the years and experienced being afraid to move around very much. Docents at these properties are often very intense about where you stand, how you move, or if you even look like you might absent-mindedly touch something. For this week's lead feature, Anthony Paletta takes us to a Frank Lloyd Wright destination where you're allowed to fully interact with the space. In fact this spot, Florida Southern College, has the highest number of his works in any one place!
Also, don't miss Brandon Withrow's tale of his time in Costa Rica and the country's efforts to make tourism fully sustainable. If you're a traveler worried about your footprint, this is the story for you.
Enjoy!

Scouting Report: The Nice C Folding Table is the table you didn't know you needed at the beach—it's portable, easy to set up, and makes picnics a breeze.
This portable table is the perfect addition to any picnic or beach brunch. It weighs less than four pounds, making it easy to transport along with all of your other goodies. And when you arrive at your outdoor destination, it doesn't disappoint. The metal legs and anti-slip feet keep the table sturdy through even the wildest get-togethers. And it has a host of neat nooks and crannies to keep your food, drinks, and personal items safe from the sand and dirt on the ground.
The table is waterproof, so spills are no big deal. And when it's time to pack up the party, the Nice C Table folds easily and fits into the lightweight carrying case that comes with it.

"Ah, Venice... The world's favorite romantic getaway is synonymous with amorous trysts, and not always on the up and up. For centuries, the city—which by no small coincidence is the birthplace of legendary lover Casanova—has been a magnet for romantic affairs by politicians, Hollywood elite, and regular people. But a new surveillance and tracking system—which would make it impossible to remain anonymous in the city—could throw cold water on the hotspot." — Rome correspondent Barbie Nadeau reports on the new data collection introduced by the Venice government, as well as thousands of video cameras.
OMG I Want to Rent This House! Mawhiti, Waiheke Island, New Zealand (Vrbo): The days now have a touch of chill; the gourds have been picked, shined, and placed in charming piles; and the pumpkin spice lattes are being consumed like they're water in the desert—winter is on its way to the Northern Hemisphere. This means only one thing: it's time to start planning your escape from the coming snow to more friendly climes. New Zealand's Waiheke Island would be a dream destination even if you had to rough it (in 2017, Vogue labeled it the "Hamptons of New Zealand"), but luckily for you, that sleeping bag can go right out the window thanks to Mawhiti, an architectural masterpiece that has plenty of luxurious rooms and plush amenities all situated in an outdoor paradise.
Rather than one big living space, this home consists of multiple structures for communal living, private living, and, of course, outdoor living. In short: the best of every world.
It's clear why Vogue compared Waiheke Island to the Hamptons though, if we may be so bold, we think that New Zealand's version has one long toned and tanned leg up on New York's favorite glittering playground. After a year stuck at home stateside, you can't beat the dream of relocating to the sunny climes of New Zealand to "winter" in style.
Book Your Stay: Mawhiti, Waiheke Island, New Zealand $1,815/night via Vrbo

Bigger isn't always better—sometimes instead of a hulking tome, it's a smaller text tucked in a stack or perched on an end-table that transports you away from somebody's living room. That's why the latest selection for our series on gorgeous coffee table books (Just Booked) is the petite but charming A Table in Paris: The Cafés, Bistros, and Brasseries of the World's Most Romantic City by John Donohue.
Over the course of two visits in 2019, Donohue (a former New Yorker editor whose sketches can be found here) sketched the restaurants of Paris—famous mainstays like Le Grand Véfour, impossible-to-get-a-seat spots like Abri, and relative unknowns like Quinson. Peppered throughout are little stories from travelers, chefs, and cultural luminaries on their favorite spots.
